Far from the tree

Thirteen-year-old James Campbell lives with his mom, his older brother Jason, and his younger brothers Josh and Justin. Their father and eldest brother are in jail. One night, the police nab Jason, whom they believe to be involved in a car theft ring. Another Campbell boy lives up to the family’s poor reputation.

At school the new principal, Mr. Kelly, offers a deal—get good grades and he’ll buy lunches for James. As James gets help with math, joins the chess club, and makes new friends, he dreams of a new future—different from the one everyone sees for him.

But Jason has left him with thousands in cash and a “relay box” used to copy key fobs and steal cars. James is now a target—both the police and the criminals demand his help. Will he end up like his dad and brothers? As Mr. Kelly says, every day is a test, and he is determined to pass.
